As the Oscars draw criticism for their perceived lack of diversity (prompting a revival of the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite on Twitter), The Telegraph’s film critic Robbie Collin has warned that “this might be Bafta’s chance to disgrace itself on similar grounds”, as the “film and lead acting categories are purest toothpaste”. Bafta chief executive Emily Berry told the Telegraph that she felt the Baftas would need to "set themselves targets" in the future.
"Our industry isn’t diverse enough, so the pool of people to draw award winners from isn’t diverse enough," she said. "I want the awards to be as diverse as they possibly can be. But people can only vote on what they’ve seen.” A protest group under the banner "Bafta Blackout" are expected to attend tonight's awards ceremony. British actor Danny John Jules, best known for playing The Cat in Red Dwarf, has spoken in support of Bafta Blackout: "When you're a black actor, you walk with the whole community on your shoulders. When you are Benedict Cumberbatch or Eddie Redmayne, you walk with a nice tuxedo on your shoulders," he told the BBC, "If [black actors] start to speak up for their brethren, you see the fallout."
Not raw bison liver, thankfully. The Executive Chef of Grosvenor House, where Bafta guests will be sitting down to eat after the ceremony, has revealed the evening's menu. Nigel Boschetti will be cooking up the following:
Starter: Beetroot marinated salmon, horseradish yoghurt, pink grapefruit dressing, confit lemon
Main Course: Loin of lamb ‘en croute’, slow braised shoulder of lamb, spiced red cabbage with golden raisins, butternut fondant, spinach and watercress mash
Dessert: Dark chocolate brownie with mousse, lavender cremeux and berry compote
Being a staunch vegan - aside from that awards-induced lapse on the set of The Revenant - Leonardo DiCaprio will be eating from an entirely seperate menu, reported to include an aubergine tian, peppers roasted over English Beachwood and quinoa salad, and a vegan coconut crème brûlée with fresh raspberries, lime and Thai basil.
Following the excess of the $55,000 Oscar nominees goody bag - with its luxury loo roll and vampire breast lifts - it seems the Baftas are going the austerity route. As reported yesterday, the Bafta freebies include: Fortnum and Mason ‘Bafta blend’ tea, Lancome mascara (£18), four bottles of £1.29 Bottle Green fruit cordial and an Evian water facial spray (£7.99). This lot, plus a New Zealand winery tour and a brass and leather hold-all carrying it all, add up to about £1,500.
