Back in June 2015, an ill-prepared Guerrero took on a motivated Martinez in Carson, California. The result was a split-decision victory for Guerrero, but that was one of the worst decisions of the year.
Martinez dropped Guerrero in the fourth round and did the better work overall, but he still wasn't awarded the decision he earned. Guerrero took a much-needed break from the ring, and now he's returning against Garcia.
If his effort isn't better on Saturday, the outcome may not be as fortunate.
In August 2015, in a gross mismatch, Garcia punished an over-the-hill Paulie Malignaggi for almost nine rounds before referee Arthur Mercante Jr. called a halt to the bout.
At this stage of his career, Malignaggi had no business in the ring—at least not against a fighter of Garcia's caliber. The fight was never close or competitive. It was a one-sided beating from the beginning to the end.
Garcia is in for a much tougher assignment against Guerrero.
The next era of the welterweight division will begin with this bout. The first of Mayweather's vacated titles will be awarded to the winner, but there's also a potential big payday on the horizon against Amir Khan.
Khan is boxing's version of Rodney Dangerfield. He seems to get no respect, but he has said that he wants to fight the winner. Since he's the No. 1 contender, it would make sense for him to get a look.
Some might argue it should be him fighting for the vacant title. No matter where a potential fight with Khan would take place, a bout between him and Guerrero or a rematch with Garcia would be a fairly hot ticket.
